  64. This is a release of the Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer 
  65. driver with support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4L & 4Si/4Si MX 
  66. printers, which includes HP-GL/2 support.

  70. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS 3.1

  74. To install Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer driver version 
  75. 31.V1.18 for Windows 3.1:
  76.  
  77. NOTE:  If you intend to use HP Intellifont for Windows to
  78.     produce screen fonts for the Intellifont typefaces in the
  79.     HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4L & 4Si/4Si MX, you must install 
  80.     Intellifont for Windows BEFORE installing the printer driver.
  81.     Please refer to the Intellifont for Windows instructions.
  82.  
  83. 1.  Choose the Control Panel from the Main Group in Program
  84.     Manager.
  85. 2.  Choose the Printers icon from the Control Panel window.
  86.     The Printers dialog box appears.
  87. 3.  Choose the Add button.
  88. 4.  From the List of Printers dialog box, select Install
  89.     Unlisted or Updated printer (first printer in list).
  90. 5.  Choose install.
  91. 6.  Insert the driver disk labeled HPPCL5E version V1.18 
  92.     into your flexible disk drive and specify the
  93.     corresponding drive.
  94. 7.  Highlight the "HP LaserJet 4/4M", "HP LaserJet 4L" or 
  95.     "HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX" line in the Add Unlisted or Updated 
  96.     Printers dialog box and press [Enter].
  97. 8.  Choose Connect.
  98. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the Ports list box
  99.     and press [Enter].
  100. 10. Choose Setup.
  101. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to 
  102.     reflect your printer's configuration.
  103. 12. Choose OK.
  104. 13. Choose Set as Default Printer.

  109. FEATURES OF HEWLETT-PACKARD HPPCL5E PRINTER DRIVER

  113. The Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E Printer Driver version V1.18 includes 
  114. support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4L & 4Si/4Si MX printer and the 
  115. following new features:
  116.  
  117. Support for Graphics Quality.
  118.  
  119.     For the LaserJet 4/4M and 4Si/4Si MX, at 600 dpi mode the 
  120.     driver supports 600, 300, and 150 dpi.  For the LaserJet 4/4M,
  121.     4L, and 4Si/4Si MX, at 300 dpi mode the driver supports 300,
  122.     150, and 75 dpi. The actual graphics resolution settings are 
  123.     denoted by the descriptive terms of Low, Medium, and High 
  124.     rather than the actual dpi.
  125.  
  126. Support for the internal Intellifont typefaces.
  127.     All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet 
  128.     4/4M, 4L, and 4Si/4Si MX printers are supported in the 19U 
  129.     symbol set.  To obtain WYSIWYG results, use HP Intellifont 
  130.     which supports on-the-fly screen fonts to match your printer 
  131.     fonts in Windows 3.1.
  132.  
  133. Support for HP-GL/2
  134.     Support for HP-GL/2 is in the HPPCL5E driver.  Under the 
  135.     Options Dialog in the Printer Setup, an option of "Graphics 
  136.     Mode" is available.  Two options are present:  HP-GL/2 or
  137.     Raster.   The first choice enables HP-GL/2 which will 
  138.     increase print performance.  The second choice uses raster 
  139.     only.  The default graphics mode is set to raster for the
  140.     HP LaserJet 4L.  The default mode is set to HP-GL/2 
  141.     for the HP LaserJet 4/4M and 4Si/4Si MX.
  142.  
  143.     For the HP LaserJet 4/4M and 4Si/4Si MX, if you encounter 
  144.     print difficulties in the default Graphics Mode, it is 
  145.     recommended that you change the mode to Raster and try your 
  146.     print job again. Additional information on this topic may be 
  147.     found in the help files that accompany this driver.  Choose 
  148.     Help from the driver dialog screens or the HP font installer 
  149.     screens to access the HELP information.
  150.  
  151. Support for EconoMode (Supported only by the LaserJet 4L) 
  152.     Support for EconoMode is in version V1.18 within the 
  153.     Options Dialog.  There are two options available, on 
  154.     or off.  With EconoMode enabled the output will resemble
  155.     draft mode, using fewer dots in order to conserve toner.
  156.  
  157. Support for Print Density (Supported only by the LaserJet 4L) 
  158.     Print density support is provided in the Options Dialog.  
  159.     Adjust the density of the printer according to the desired 
  160.     density.  The density range is one (lightest) to five 
  161.     (darkest).
  162.  
  163. Dialog Support for REt
  164.     Another feature added to the Option Dialog is the REt
  165.     (Resolution Enhancement technology) box.  The options here
  166.     are:  
  167.        Light, Medium, Dark, and Off for the HP LaserJet 4L.
  168.        Printer Default, Light, Medium, Dark, and Off for the HP
  169.      LaserJet 4/4M.
  170.        Printer Default, ON, and OFF for the LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX.

  172. Dialog Support for Resource Saving (Supported only by LaserJet 
  173.     4Si/4Si MX)
  174.     This feature, added to the main setup dialog box, allows the
  175.     user to tell the printer driver how much memory is set aside
  176.     for the each printer personality (PCL and PostScript). 
  177.     This memory is used for saving printer resources between 
  178.     printer language switching. The range is from 0KB to 99900KB.
